    "Tower of Babel"

I was born and raised in New York City. I remained in New York for college, receiving a BA from Pratt Institute in 1965. I started off working as a bank clerk, and meanwhile I continued my architectural studies at Columbia University, graduating with a Master of Science degree in 1969. After working for several years in the architectural field, I formed my own studio, the Albert Lorenz Studio, which my artist daughter, Kirsten Guerin, later joined. The studio produces a wide spectrum of art including illustrations for advertising, newspapers, magazines, editorials, children's books and book covers as well as illustrations for many architectural firms.

My style gradually evolved when I combined my knowledge of architecture with my imagination as an artist. My work brings together a sense of fantasy and exaggerated detail with an architectural command of reality, creating a wide range of images. The intricate works of Bruegel and Bosch definitely inspire me, along with extensive reading, which gives me visual ideas. I enjoy working with subject matter that deals with the odd and some would say grotesque.

The best part of being an artist is being able to go with my own instincts as how I think the project should look, and the hardest is satisfying editors. I think that it's really important to listen to your own inner voice -- it's the only way to achieve your art. I have tried to encourage my students to do just that in the thirty years I spent teaching media and communications at my alma mater, Pratt Institute in Brooklyn.

In addition to teaching, I have authored and illustrated children's books, including Metropolis, published by Harry N. Abrams, which won the Gold Medal from the Los Angeles Society of Illustrators and the Stevan Dohanos award from the New York Society of Illustrators for the Tower of Babel. My newest book, The First Day of School, is scheduled for fall 2008 release. I've also published trade books and authored several adult books about architectural illustration, which have appeared in The New York Times, NationalGeographic, Architectural Record, and Newsweek. I've also had the honor of receiving commissions from the American Institute of Architects, the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the American Museum of Natural History, New York.

I recently retired from Pratt Institute as a Distinguished Professor, and have since been teaching illustration at Adelphi University on Long Island. These days I work from my home studio in the company of my wife, Maureen, and our pal and companion, Butch, a two-year-old boxer.
